Message to Natural Gas Opposition: Stop Exploiting Children!

A retired schoolteacher and mother comments on the increasing tendency of the natural gas opposition to exploit children in their campaigns, while also pursuing the indoctrination of these young minds.

Children:  Everyone recognizes the weight given to the indoctrination of them when they are young and impressionable, but the type of indoctrination and the relationship to the children of those performing the indoctrination on the children can range from acceptable to deplorable.

It can range from the Biblical admonition to parents in Proverbs 22: 6 to “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it, “ to the diabolical methods used to indoctrinate the Hitler Youth and League of German Girls.  The difference with the Biblical admonition is that there are additional admonitions such as:

  • Always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason
  • Search and seek out wisdom
  • Test all things; hold fast to what is true

In other words, know what you believe and why you believe it.  Don’t just act as a parrot and regurgitate what someone else has regurgitated and used to feed you.

The use of children in a propaganda war against fracking is scary.  It was used in an attempt to build the case in Dimock.  If the anti natural gas folks were so sure the air was polluted and causing all kinds of ill effects, why did they take children there to act as poster fodder?

The recent actions of  two teachers in a New York State elementary school are a good example of the regurgitation approach and equally nauseating.  As a former elementary teacher, I find it extremely hard to believe that the minds of those children weren’t swayed.  To have 100% of a classroom parroting the same scenario causes me to be beyond suspect.

Apparently the teachers, who see themselves as having such a moral obligation to protect the environment from all the perceived ills of hydraulic fracturing, left their consciences somewhere in left field when it came to exploiting our most precious resource, children.  Teachers, as authority figures, have tremendous power and influence over these young minds.  Public schools are not an acceptable venue for indoctrination of any kind.

The song and dance in another clip was hopefully not done in a school setting but sadly the use of children by their parents to parrot their misguided parents’ anti “fracking” rhetoric.  Children typically reflect the beliefs held by their parents, so that doesn’t surprise me.  It also doesn’t surprise me that music was used as it is a great tool to build group solidarity.

I would challenge all to strive for the standard in the points I listed above.  Be prepared with facts to defend your position.  Search and seek out the truth, and when you find it, hold onto it.  Then you can actually present a defense of your beliefs and not be guilty of tossing someone else’s cookies!
