Natural Gas Industry Raises Money and Awareness for Local Health Projects

As the Marcellus workforce becomes more local, so too does the desire of natural gas companies to give back to the communities in which their employees live and operate. This past week, Cabot Oil & Gas and Seneca Resources raised milestone funding for two health related projects in their operating areas.

Susquehanna County Exceeds Goal for Cabot’s Endless Mountains Health Systems’ Match Fund

For the better part of the last century, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, has been a place where regional progress wasn’t defined by job creation or population growth. Instead, it lived, well, mostly died, as the number of farmers able to pay their mortgages on time really started to fade and local businesses struggled to stay afloat. The county had zero industrial bases from which to grow, and the total population was in decline.

Quality health care, something many of us take for granted, was only available in Montrose. Any other options were at least an hour away. The hospital, privately built 60 years ago, has been in need of improvements for a long time, but the funding simply was not available to allow the facility to keep up with technological advances and expansions. The facilities were overcrowded, new life saving technology was hard to come by or even afford, and new doctors were not interested in coming to the area to practice medicine.

A few months ago, we announced Cabot Oil & Gas’s intention to donate $1 million to the Endless Mountains Health System for a new hospital. This project had been discussed a decade ago, but stalled because of a dying economy and decreasing population.

With the influx of the natural gas industry in recent years, Susquehanna County has been experiencing a revitalization of the economics and population as work has become available and money is being spent within the community. This population increase and decrease in unemployment offering more individuals needed health insurance also brought about a need to begin seriously considering the need for a new hospital.

Cabot, saw this as an opportunity to be more than a gas company. It saw this as an opportunity to be part of the community and work with it to raise money and awareness for a desperately needed project. In addition to its initial monetary donation, Cabot challenged the local community to generate its own million dollars. In return for this gracious community donation, every dollar the community raised, Cabot then pledged to match it.

Last Friday, the campaign finished with a bang for the Endless Mountains Health System. In only a 6 month period, the community stepped forward and donated an impressive $1.25 million.

Cabot would like to thank all those who donated to the Cabot Community Match Fund for the installment of a new Physicians Clinic to accompany the Endless Mountains’ new hospital. We’re amazed at the community support that we’ve received and feel truly grateful to be able to assist in such a clear and important need. The many groups, companies, families and individuals who donated serve as a true reminder of community strength and unity. http://wellsaidcabot.com/2012/07/24/hospitaltotal/

Seneca Resources Golfs for a Cure in Brookville

This year Brookville, Pennsylvania’s Relay for Life held their 3rd annual Golf for a Cure event. Seneca Resources had the privilege of sponsoring the event for the first time and helping to raise a record amount of money for the local American Cancer Society chapter.

This is the 3rd year for the Golf For A Cure for the Brookville Relay For Life .  This year the Seneca Resources Team took it over and didn’t anticipate such a huge success as it was.  We changed when & where it was in prior years, got our vendors involved, and here we are.

With only 18 teams in the past and only raising a little over $1,000, we are very happy with the outcome.  We surpassed the goal I had original set for the team of $3,000 to raising $6,168.00.  This is awesome and I couldn’t have asked for anything more for our 1st year of planning the event. –Robert Boulware, Seneca Resources

The event, held at the Clarion Oaks Golf Club, brought out approximately 130 golfers and consisted of more than 24 Marcellus Shale sponsors encompassing a wide diversity of the supply chain. The Brookville Relay for Life doesn’t take place until Saturday, August 4, 2012 so please visit their event page if you are interested in making a contribution.
