Though Colorado may be best known for its skiing, oil and gas production plays an important role in the state’s economy. About a third of Colorado’s natural gas production and 3.7 percent of oil production take place on federal lands. Oil and gas production supports 89,000 midstream and upstream jobs in the state and severance and production taxes provided $212 million in state severnce tax revenues in 2019.
