Louisiana is home to a large share of natural gas production as well as offshore oil production. In 2019, the state produced 45.9 million barrels of oil and 3.2 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, 9 percent of total American marketed gas production. Roughly a third of this production occurred on federal lands. That year, oil and natural gas production generated $1.7 billion in property taxes, rents, royalties, and fees. The state also recieves a share of GOMESA funding – more than $155.7 million in FY2020 – for coastal conservation, restoration and hurricane protection.
