North Dakota ranked second in the nation in crude oil production in 2019, trailing only Texas. The state has about 2% of American natural gas reserves. Since the shale revolution in 2008, oil and gas production has become a major industry in the state, directly employing 20,770 people and providing $2.6 billion in state production and tax revenues in 2019. These taxes included $858 million to fund state education over the 2017-2019 biennium.
