Wyoming, where the first oil well was drilled in 1884, has a long history in petroleum production. In 2019, when 21 out of Wyoming’s 23 counties produced oil and/or natural gas, the state ranked 8th in production of both oil and natural gas. This production generated $1.67 billion in revenues, taxes, and fees for local, state, and federal governments. The industry directly employed more than 19,000 people, paying more than $1.12 billion.
